REOPENING OF SCHOOLS: A WISE OR A FOOLISH DECISION ?

 by Udit Khattar

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected education all over the world. It has almost been two years now that the students have not been able to attend their schools and colleges as everything has shifted to the online mode. But As we are hearing in the news that the government is thinking of reopening the schools so that the students can get quality education but the increasing COVID-19 cases are posing a dilemma for the government If they are going on the right track. It appears to be that a large portion of the misgivings about returning schools depend on misguided judgments, for example, kids ought to be vaccinated prior to going to class. Many guardians are under the feeling that returning school infers compulsory participation for their kids. The government should have a word with the parents to bring back the children to schools safely.

Many states & educational institutions have made declarations regarding the reopening of schools for physical classes. Many have decided to call the students in senior classes only to attend the lessons. Some say that students in lower classes should be allowed to attend the classes first.

The state government of Himachal Pradesh has decided to close the schools till the 22nd of August. Earlier schools were open only for students in the 10th and 12th standards. The teaching and the non-teaching staff may need to attend the school. The state government of Maharashtra has decided to reopen the schools in areas where covid-19 cases are under control from the 17th of August in rural areas for classes 5-12 and classes 8-12 in urban areas.

According to the Delhi government the students of classes 10th & 12th can attend school for admission-related work, counseling, and practical related queries for the upcoming board examinations. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu has decided to reopen the schools with 50 percent of students for classes 9 to 12 from 1st of September. The medical colleges will also be reopening from 16th August.

The state government of West Bengal took a decision on 5th July of reopening schools and colleges after the Durga Puja holidays, on alternate days. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu shared the information of reopening of schools from 1st September in Assam.

The Kerala government has decided to reopen the schools after getting the students vaccinated against coronavirus. The Karnataka government has decided to the schools for students of classes 9 to 12 reopen on 23rd August. The government has told that extra care will be taken.

Schools give learning and social help for understudies as well as, crucially, childcare, without which many parents cannot return to work. Nonetheless, returning schools convey the general wellbeing hazard of viral resurgence. Guardians and educators are naturally watchful.

Although it would be great if the schools are reopened as the students would be able to go to the school physically and gain access to proper learning and knowledge but this decision of reopening the schools must be guided primarily by epidemiological evidence too because a fresh wave of infections also has to be prevented.
